What We Do
Currently Child to Chef is operating in the Rainier skyway and in Seattle communities where 74% of the students are a part of the free or reduced lunch program. There is a big need for scholarships in this community. At Child to Chef, our primary social impact is teaching young students lifelong skills that will help reduce their food budget, while also sharing the importance of a well balanced diet, and building a strong work ethic helping them succeed as they continue to mature. Cooking classes and home education courses are no longer offered in most public schools as they are being prioritized behind more sciences, technology-based classes, and foreign language. There is a strong need for programs that help teach students important life skills, like cooking and nutrition knowledge.

Our Goal
Our goal is to create a learning environment in which they are doing something productive and feel valued, which will help give the students confidence and emotional stability they need to flourish. Child to Chef aims to provide a sustainable future for the communities in Seattle by looking to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and providing quality education, good health and well-being, and reduced inequalities. By providing students who are on free and reduced lunches with affordable after-school culinary training, Child to Chef works to reduce inequalities in communities in Seattle. Our classes provide quality and engaging culinary education, which is focused on teaching the students about nutrition, culinary techniques, and cooking for their well-being. In the classes students also learn important life skills such as time management, teamwork (interacting with other students to complete dishes), and persistence. Students hard skills include learning proper knife techniques, kitchen measurements, following instructions, baking, roasting, food safety, sanitation, food storage, and other lessons.
The Why...
In the United States, it is becoming less common that people know how to cook proficiently, with many people not even knowing how to cook basic meals. Home education classes have been removed from the vast majority of school curriculums, making it harder to prepare the next generation of kids to be able to cook for themselves. To combat this issue, Child to Chef, a non-profit organization, was created to help teach children how to cook, learn about nutrition, and to provide a productive after-school program for children. Creating a fun and engaging learning environment for the children is not only vital to giving them a valuable life skill, but also to boosting a child’s self-esteem. Chef-trained instructors give children the attention they need to help grow both as a chef and person. Child to Chef’s goal is to have every child learn to cook so the next generation of child-rearing adults becomes independent and capable of cooking for their families.
